Sanriku hisui awabi(Jade Abalone Shell) 【Growth Stage Specimen】
The Sanriku Jade Abalone is known for its vivid, jade-like green hue—
a natural brilliance that sparkles beautifully within the acrylic block.
This specimen contains abalone shells ranging from approximately 5 to 15 months of growth.
Clear sheets are placed at both the front and back of the specimen, allowing for multiple ways to enjoy and display it.
【STORY】
This shell comes from a fully land-based aquaculture project run by Genshoei(元正榮),
a fisheries company based in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture.
Their challenge began with a sense of crisis as abalones in the ocean continued to decline.
The journey was far from easy.
The Great East Japan Earthquake destroyed their entire facility.
As they worked toward recovery, another disaster struck:
on February 26, 2025, a forest fire broke out in Ofunato City.
Their storage area and seawater pumps were burned,
the tanks were contaminated,
and all of the abalones—every single one—were lost.
Even the remaining shells had no clear path forward and were destined for disposal.
From the hope that
“this beautifully jade-colored abalone might still be given new life”,
this encapsulated specimen was born.
Though small, each shell takes at least five months to grow to this size.
Such is the long and painstaking nature of abalone cultivation.
We invite you to hold it in your hands
and experience the quiet beauty of this remarkable abalone.
