When spring arrives, dandelions paint the fields in vibrant yellow.
The English name "dandelion" derives from a French phrase meaning "lion's tooth"—a name inspired by the plant's jagged leaves, which resemble a lion's fangs.
The flower possesses a highly evolved structure; it opens in the morning and closes in the evening.
After blooming, the stem collapses, only to rise again a few days later. It stretches taller than it was when the flower was in bloom, eventually producing seeds topped with fluffy down.
The radially arranged down acts as a high-performance parachute for dispersing seeds.
A single dandelion bears nearly 200 of these delicate, fluffy plumes.
We have preserved the yellow flowers as pressed specimens and sliced the white seed heads thinly to reveal their intricate inner structure with clarity.
