It is found in a variety of forms in metal mines around the world, including cubes, spheres, and disks, as well as freely gathered polyhedra.
Pyrite produced in Spain is also famous for its cubic crystals.
The English name "pyrite" is derived from the Greek word "pyr," meaning "fire."
Pyrite was once used as flint because it produced fire when struck with a hammer. It is also known by the dishonorable name of "fool's gold" because it was frequently mistaken for gold.
